It is our first visit to Murcia. After the Festival Entierro de la Sardina, we extend our stay some days to visit more highlights in Murcia and the surrounding area.
We start the day in our Hotel Catalonia Conde De Floridablanca with our usual extensive breakfast.
Afterward, we exchange our data with the friendly staff. They are always very polite, helpful and spread a good mood.
First, we visit the Real Casino Murcia, one of the most remarkable buildings in the city. It is also the most frequented civilian building, with 150,000 visitors per year.
The building, founded by the Sociedad del Casino, an association of the bourgeoisie, functioned as a meeting place.
Different art movements meet each other here, which parallel existed in Spain at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.
After the renovation between 2006 and 2009, King Juan Carlos I awarded the building the titles Real.
The glazed restaurants to the right and left of the entrance door in Calle Traperia are popularly known as the Aquarium.

From the following Galeria Central, which runs from east to west, passages branch off into differently designed rooms.
First, we go to the library, which stands out for its wooden galleries, then to the Congresillo with its paintings, a meeting place for important personalities. The ballroom with its gilded decorations and ceiling paintings follows.
Then come various smaller rooms and halls, such as the Pompeian courtyard with its sculptures and the billiard room and the armory.
Finally, we visit the Tocador, a hall of mirrors with gold-painted decorations that served as a dressing and make-up room for the ladies.
The Real Casino shows some important paintings of contemporary artists such as Germán Hernández Amores, Pedro Sánchez Picazo, Juan Antonio Gil Montejano, and Obdulio Miralles.
We walk back past the city hall and have some time left to visit Veronica’s market.
Before we enter the covered market built between 1914 and 1917, though, we inspect the remains of the old Arab city wall north of it.
Then we enter the market hall where one offers the culinary delicacies from the Region of Murcia. Fish, meat and fruit and vegetables dominate the offer.
Besides that, the market is also known for its outstanding spices. Saffron from the region deserves special mention.
We can hardly get enough of fresh bread, but the fruit and vegetables impress us the most.
