More InformationIt served as a royal burial place mainly for the 18 to 20 Dynasty (ca. 1550-1069 BC). The Valley of the Kings is a unique example of early Egyptian architecture and sculpture. 65 graves and pits have been discovered so far, but the valley still holds more hidden secrets.
Unfortunately, photography and filming is very difficult or completely forbidden. To protect the graves, only 3 graves can be visited at a time. Some are completely closed.
The highlight is of course the grave of Tutankhamun, which was found almost intact by Howard Carter in 1922. In the video you see KV57, the grave of Horemheb (1319-1292 BC), a Pharaoh in the new empire.
Since 1979, the monuments of ancient Thebes are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
