Akrotiri – The Pompeji of Greece

Visitors of the Greek Cycladic island of Santorini should not miss a visit to the archaeological site of Akrotiri in the south of the island. The closed since 2005 excavation site was reopened shortly before the Orthodox Easter, 2012.

Archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos discovered the city from the Bronze Age in 1967.

For 3500 years Akrotiri, named after the nearby village, was buried under volcanic ash. In its heyday, the city had already paved roads, a sewerage system and multi-storey houses.
