A short visit to Munich

Our last visit in Munich was 15 years ago, in 2008. It is time for a short visit to the city we’ve lived for 30 years.

We spend the night in the city apartment of Ursula’s cousin near Schwabing Hospital, not far from Münchner Freiheit. The first day in Munich is rainy, so we used this day for shopping. The next day doesn’t start well in terms of the weather either, so we decide to take a walk along Leopoldstraße and Ludwigstraße to the pedestrian zone in the center of Munich. One reason for our visit to Munich is to discover changes that Munich has undergone in the last 15 years.

At first glance, we don’t see major changes between Münchner Freiheit and Odeonsplatz. The area from Münchner Freiheit to Siegestor is mainly characterized by restaurants and bars, where many tourists frequent during the day, and food, drinks and music dominate the hustle and bustle in the evening. One exception is the headquarters of Munich Reinsurance, whose main entrance is marked by the “Walking Man”.

The Siegestor, commissioned by Ludwig I, was severely damaged during the Second World War and only partially reconstructed. Today, it serves as a memorial to peace.

Ludwigstrasse runs from the Siegestor to Odeonsplatz. It is mainly lined by the Ludwig-Maximilians-University and its libraries. Next to it is the Ludwigskirche (St. Ludwig’s Catholic Parish Church) and the Bavarian State Library.

The ANDER ART Festival – a Zero-Waste-Festival – takes place in front of the Feldherrenhall at Odeonsplatz. Great international music with free admission, gastronomy with rescued food, savings in CO2, waste and energy – this is how the ANDER ART Festival presents itself.

Due to the Oktoberfest and the soccer match of FC Bayern Munich that is taking place in the afternoon, the Marienplatz, in front of the city hall, is lined by many people. Here, we notice a first change to Munich – the FC Bayern fan article stores have multiplied in Munich.

Passing the Frauenkirche, we meet the brass band Feldmoching e.V. Munich in the most beautiful Bavarian costume in front of the Hirmer department store.

At the Augustiner Bräu, serving the beer from Munich’s oldest brewery, the construction site opposite stings our faces. Here, only the facade of the original building remains. Pictures on the construction fences show a new building to be constructed, whose house facade will be identical to the original building. Behind it, an office (and residential ?) building with an inner courtyard and roof terraces is being constructed.

This seems to be another change in Munich, as can also be seen diagonally opposite at the building with the TK Maxx department store. An inner courtyard with green roof terraces has already been created here, as you can see well in Google Earth.

We continue to Weinhaus Neuner, just a few meters away in the parallel street Herzogspitalstraße. It is the oldest wine house in Munich and one of the more upscale restaurants in the city, serving Bavarian and Austrian gourmet cuisine with wines from Baden and the Wachau. We confirmed our reservation for two days later.

In the evening, we have arranged to meet at Trattoria La Piazza, opposite the Schwabing Hospital. This Trattoria has a lovely terrace and excellent food; the weather has recovered, so we can sit outside almost until midnight. Plus, there is very friendly and honest service! I left the film camera on the windowsill and got it back in the morning.
