Finally, we can test the DJI Phantom 4 drone, kindly made available by USAID during our stay in Kyrgyzstan. We spent two evenings charging the batteries and installing the latest updates. This had turned out to be more difficult than expected, as DJI completely changed the installation process from Phantom 3 to Phantom 4. But now we are ready to start the first real test.

We drive to Lenin Square and try to start with the drone, what turns out well. But during the flight, I get only get a strongly delayed picture on the tablet. With our own Drone Phantom 3, we use a Galaxy Tab S T800 and this works without problems.

Two young men join us. They belong to the group of young men who film the weddings with drones here. They have noticed that I have problems. When they see the tablet, they consider that Samsung would not be good, and we should use an iPhone. I can not agree with that, but when they offer to test it on their iPhone, I might agree. And lo and behold, it works fine.
Two pretty girls who presumably also belong to a wedding party ask us, whether we want to take a photograph of them. Of course, we say yes! The immediate follow-up question was whether they may take a photograph of us together with them. We had to smile because it is already clear to us that Asians like to be photographed with “long noses”, for whatever reason.
Now we have to go back to the hotel because we did not install the required app on the smartphone of Ursula, a Samsung Galaxy S6.

The next morning we want to go to Uzgen, so we go to the Drama Theater in the morning to test the drone with the Galaxy S6. And even this smartphone works fine. So we learned that our tablet works with the Phantom 3, but for the Phantom 4 is already outdated.

Now we are happy that we have solved all the issues now and we get beautiful pictures and videos. The view over the city Osh and the Sulayman Mountain compensate us for not having climbed it.

More InformationWe could have gone up the Sulayman Mountain, but the ascent with all the film equipment was then too difficult for us. We enjoy the bird’s eye view of Osh provided by the drone.
