The Dazu Rock Carvings are about 1.5 hours drive north-west of Chongqing.

At 75 different sites in the Chongqing Municipality, estimated 50,000 Chinese religious sculptures were carved in stone, with the oldest statues dating back to the early Tang Dynasty.

In the 9th century, a military outpost of the Shu Kingdom was located at the foot of the North Mountain.

Many Buddhists sought refuge here during persecution. A general gave the orders to build the first sculptures.
Since 1999, the carvings belong to the UNESCO world heritage sites.
