After passing Ishkashim, we make a quick stop. The Wakhan Valley lies ahead of us. We are at about 2500 m above sea level.

The surrounding mountains have a height of about 5000 m and the snow-capped mountains in the background up to 7000 m. The snow-covered mountains of the Hindu Kush in the south are behind the Wakhan Corridor in Pakistan.

More InformationA few miles after Ishkashim we pass the remains of the Kahkaha Fortress. It is named after an epic hero, a king of the fire-worshippers, a young form of religious tradition. The massive walls and towers next to the road are still well recognizable. But we do not stop because the next day we will visit the fortress in Yamchun.

The journey leads through an almost flat terrain. The Panj river widens in the valley, between are a myriad of small islands and meadows. Many a lonesome cyclist covered many of kilometers in this area.

Here we see Charlie Hannaford, The Novice Explorer, for the first time. He is readily identifiable by his green cotton jersey and the orange saddle-bags. Later in Langar, we will have the opportunity to speak with him.

Then, on the left, two snow-capped mountain peaks emerge in the distance. These are Engels Peak (6510 m) and Karl Marx Peak (6726 m). The colors of the landscape become more and more blurred, giving the impression that the landscape is painted.

We rarely pass through small villages. In the early evening, we reach our accommodation in Yamg which lies next to the village Vrang.

In the evening, the whole family pleases us with traditional dances.
