Lake Toplitz is a small lake in the Styria in western Austria, 61 mi away from Salzburg. From the end of the Grundlsee the Toplitzsee is within walking distance.

The lake is 337 ft deep and because of the many tree trunks which do not rot, it is not without danger for divers. From a depth of 65 ft the water has no oxygen and contains hydrogen sulphide. At 196 ft the water is salty. At these depths, only a worm – the Toplitzseewurm – can survive.

More InformationThe lake is surrounded by many legends. The fact is that boxes with forged pound notes were found here. They were sunk by the Nazis in the last days of the war to destroy the evidence of their forgery. In order to reach the rear end of the lake you can use the so called Plaetten, these are narrow wood boats which are sometimes tight together. From there a narrow path is leading to a small lake – the Kammersee.
On our way we see a cut in the rock- a wood drift – which was carved in the mountain by prisoners of Maria Theresa .

The Kammersee is a small idyllic tarn that is considered as source of the River Traun.
