We have heard about the movie Les Parapluies de Cherbourg with Catherine Deneuve, which had moved Cherbourg into the limelight.
We have also heard that there is an umbrella factory in Cherbourg, which can be visited (but with reservation). So we make our way to seek out.
Soon we stand in front of a store, which is decorated with colorful umbrellas. It’s called Parapluies Le Veritable Cherbourg.

Quickly turns out that a tour of the production is not possible, since a new plant is built. But the owner is present and willing to give us an interview. We are happy and use the opportunity.
Jean-Pierre Yvon
Monsieur Jean-Pierre Yvon is the founder and owner of the brand Le Veritable Cherbourg. In the past, he was a photographer and on his journeys, the people always alluded to the umbrellas of Cherbourg.
One morning, he wondered, why he should not design and sell umbrellas under the name of his hometown. In 1986, he registered the label Le veritable Cherbourg, designed a model and had it manufactured. But the quality did not meet his expectations.
He established its own Manufacturing Workshop in Cherbourg which went into service in 1996.

More InformationJean-Pierre Yvon does not only produce extremely robust umbrellas but they are also stylistically valuable and practical.
Different models for different needs have expanded into a product family.

Not only the ribs arches of the umbrellas are extremely resilient, the fabrics are also so robust that they cannot be torn up.
Special seams round off the quality spectrum. The umbrellas withstand wind speeds up to 150 km. Finally, they have to withstand even the fierce winter storms Normandy.

The robustness of the umbrellas helped him to get the exclusive equipment of the Formula 1. But also important personalities of the public life and statesmen like to use its umbrellas. Embroidered with individual logos, they are in great demand at well-known brands like VW, Moet & Chandon, Cartier etc.
The normal models cost between € 120.- to 350.- €, the luxury models between € 6000.- to € 25000.-. The latter then have e.g. a ring gold 24 carat, which costs € 2500.-.

The umbrellas are sold through its own web shop and then shipped by air freight. You can find the umbrellas also in selected luxury shops all over the world.
We very cordially thank Monsieur Jean-Pierre Yvon for the detailed information and the interview!
