Already in the run-up to our visit to Liège, we had heard about the city’s new train station on several occasions. Therefore it was indispensable for us to visit it.
The modernization of Liège-Guillemins station was completed in 2009, turning the station into a major European hub for French (Thaly) and German (ICE) high-speed trains, as well as Belgian regional trains of the NGBE (SNCB/NMBS). Every day 500 trains run into the station.

The architect Santiago Calatrava designed and created the station.

The arched roof rises to 30 meters above the platforms over a length of 200 meters. Through its gently curved shape, 40,000 tons of steel give the station a fascinating lightness.

The basement houses the station’s service rooms, cafes, and fast food outlets.

More InformationThe station concourse with the platforms is open on all sides and thus continually opens up new perspectives.
The sculpture Liège Together stands in front of the station. Liège Together is the slogan of Liège’s regional marketing approach, to increase the popularity and to give the city a positive image.

Through a variety of actions and events, the city hopes to attract more residents, more investors, and more visitors. Besides, one wants to strengthen the cohesion of the inhabitants.
From the top floor of the station, our view sweeps to the Street-Art in the Rue Varin. The Belgian artist Christophe-Gilbert Lequarré, better known as SPYK, has created the oversize closed fist entitled Love on the facade of this building.

On the wall below, you see ‘les chevaliers’ (the knights) by the French artist Honet, over a length of more than 25 meters.
From Liège-Guillemins station, there are good bus connections to Place Saint-Lambert. On the way, we can still have a look at the monument of Charlemagne (Emperor Charles the Great) at the Parc d’Avroy, which is also very popular here.

After the visit to the station, we can confidently claim that we have never seen a more beautiful and impressive station as the one of Liège!
