Monemvasia lies on a small peninsula off the east coast of the eastern finger of the Peloponnese.
The upper town forms a deserted citadel. The town was founded by the Byzantines and served as a refuge for endangered ruler classes. It is perhaps the most picturesque village in Greece.

More InformationThe only entrance to the lower part of the town runs through a narrow gate of a fortification wall, at the southeast flank of a rock which is 984ft high and 1.2 miles long. In the narrow lanes car traffic is impossible.
Today you can find here some hotels and the holiday accommodations of wealthy Athenians.
Between lower and upper town is only a single narrow access, which was easy to defend.
