From That Phanom, we drive about 40 km further south, always along the Mekong and with that at the border to Laos. The journey goes by torrential precipitations at times. We then reach Mukdahan, the capital of the province of the same name. Mukdahan is 700 km to the north-east of Bangkok, directly at the Mekong.
Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge
The Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge leads from Mukdahan to Savannakhet in Laos. It is one of a total of four friendship bridges from Thailand via the Mekong to Laos. But the bridge does not only make Laos accessible but also forms a trade and transport link to Vietnam.

More InformationThe construction started in 2004. The prestressed concrete bridge finally opened in 2007. The 12 m wide bridge has 2 lanes and the traffic drives on the right. Unlike Laos, there is left-hand traffic in Thailand and the direction of traffic is changed on the Thai side.

A nicely designed seaside promenade provides a good view of the 1600m-long Second Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
Indochina Market – Talat Indojin
The city of Mukdahan is not only known for the bridge but above all for its Indochina market. The so-called Talat Indojin, or Talat Tha Sadet, takes place daily from 8-18 on the river bank.

Along the promenade one sales booth follows the other. Part of the market lies under the Mekong promenade and is thus covered. Here it is shady and therefore well tempered during the day.

The market is similar to a flea market. In addition to clothing and cheap goods from China, cheap handicraft products from Vietnam are also offered, e.g. Lacquerware. But also silk and cotton fabrics from Isan. Predominately Asian tourists visit the colorful market.

Hot food stalls and restaurants provide the physical well-being. In one of the restaurants with a terrace to the Mekong, we enjoy a typical lunch while watching the life on the river.
