By Night Train from Stockholm to Luleå - Sweden

The high north has always fascinated us and so we welcome the invitation to travel to Lulea.

The city of Luleå is on the coast of northern Sweden in Swedish Lapland, just an hour from the arctic circle. We are pleased to take the train on the outbound journey. So we have the opportunity to see more of the landscape.

In the evening we meet our small group of bloggers at Stockholm Central Station. Here we get our ticket and walk to the train.

On the night train from Stockholm to Luleå

The 900-kilometer journey takes about 13 hours and leads from Stockholm via Uppsala, Älvsbyn and Boden to Lulea.

We reach Uppsala already in the dark, so that we hardly see something of it, as well as from most of the route.

But we see extensive forests and beautiful lakes. Between this from time to time a village or a smaller town.

On the train, we get a 3-bed compartment, which we share with a colleague and stow away our luggage.

Then there is time to laugh and joke over a beer with our blogger friends. It is amazing how many people can find space in such a compartment.

The next morning we have breakfast in the diner of the train.

In Älvsbyn the train stops for a few minutes, which we use for an excursion to the platform.

In the village of Boden, the railway line forks and we have to wait for a return train, which takes us from there to Luleå.

It is the railway route, where the ore is transported from Lulea to Narvik in Norway.

On the platform, we find a boy with an oversized chocolate bar. But we can not find out whether there is a production facility here.

Our blogger friend Ajay did not want to miss to borrow the chocolate for a photo.

Arrival in Luleå

In Luleå, Camilla Bondareva, Communication officer Visit Luleå AB, is already waiting with a minivan at the station.

She kindly does not drive us directly to the hotel but gives us an overview of the most important points during a small drive around Luleå.

This includes a large steel bridge over the Luleälven bay, connecting Luleå with the sea. Afterward, we return to Skeppsbrogatan, the promenade and the central landing stage for small boats.

Due to the construction site, we make a small detour that takes us past the Luleå Domkyrka. Then we turn into the Smedjegatan, that crosses the pedestrian zone Storgatan.

Camilla stops the van opposite the Kulturens Hus and the Stadsbibliothek. We have reached the Clarion Hotel Sense, our base for the next days.
