A Paddan boat tour is the perfect way to experience Gothenburg from the waterside. The tour takes you through the historic moats and canals, under 20 bridges into the harbor. Since the weather forecast for the next day is not very good, we decide to make the Paddan boat tour on the first day.
Paddan boat describes an extremely flat trip boats, which operate in the canals and in the harbor. The meaning of these boats quickly became clear to us. Many bridges are very low and higher boat could not pass under these. One of the bridges is so low that you have to put your head to your knees, not to bang one’s head against the bridge.

During the tour, our guide tells us a lot about the history and the sights of Gothenburg, as well as some anecdotes.
Paddan Boat Tour
The starting point of our Paddan boat tour is Kungsportsplatsen. The boat follows the Vallgraven along the Trädgårdsföreningen, one of the many gardens Gothenburg.

When we turn into the canal at Slussgatan, the old lock systems are good to see.

Our Paddan boot goes along Brunnsparken, the City Hall, the German Church and the City Museum. At Sternpiren, the canal opens out into the Göta Älv river.

Here, you also find the old customs building. More than a million Sweden emigrated from here to America at the end of the 19th century.
Upstream, we have a good view of the ships which lie in the Maritime Museum. Remarkable is the 83 m high Skanskaskrapan, the Skanska skyscraper. Due to its beveled top and the red color, the people of Gothenburg call it The lipstick.

However, the official name is Lilla Bommen, after the harbor area of the same name. Nearby is the four-masted steel barque Viking, which pleases us particularly well.

The Viking was built 1906 as a training sailing ship for the Danish merchant fleet and is the biggest sailing ship ever built in Scandinavia.

Our tour continues past loading cranes and ships until we reach Järnvågsbron, the bridge which is extremely low.

We follow the canal again and come along the Fish Church and Kungsparken, the most famous park of Gothenburg. See also City walk in Gothenburg

After Grönsakstorget mot Kungshöjd, an interesting sculpture, our Paddan boat tour ends at Kungsportsplatsen.
