Even though the weather on this spring day was very changeable, we did not want to miss to discover more about Barcelona.
Palau Nacional – Palacio Nacional – MNAC
The Palau Nacional (Catalan for National Palace) is located at the foot of Montjuic near the Olympic Stadium. Designed by Eugenio Cendoya and Enric Cata, the building was completed for the world exhibition in Barcelona in 1929. The domes and towers are reminiscent of a castle.

Since 1934, it houses the Catalan Art Museum, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya – NMAC. The museum is the largest museum in Catalonya and contains one of the most important collections of the Romanesque. Frescos from little churches in the Pyrenees form the base for the art collection of the Romanesque. The exhibition is completed by works of the Gothic style, the baroque, the renaissance and the modern age.

More InformationOn this day, we are not here to enjoy to the art, but to get a beautiful panoramic view of the Place España, the bull rings, the two Venetian towers, the Font Magica (Magic Fountain) and the four pillars, that on as a symbol of the four bars the Catalan flag.

The mood on the stairs of the MNAC is relaxed and many people enjoy the atmosphere or a drink and a snack. In between, street musicians play and drown out the noise of the city, which here above is perceptible only as a distant noise.
Olympic venues in Barcelona
A major part of 1992 Olympics was held here on the Montjuïc, the house mountain of Barcelona. The Olympiad was held under the motto of short distances. Most of the events took place in a radius of 5 km.
The most prominent building is the big stadium with its neoclassical facade, where the opening and closing ceremony as well as the track and field athletics competitions took place.

Outstanding, because of its futuristic appearance, is the 136 m high telecommunications tower of the Spanish telephone company Telefonica, the Torre di Calatrava.

Also particularly striking is the Palau Sant Jordi, with its domed roof. It was the venue for the gymnastics and volleyball competitions.

In addition, the competitions in wrestling, fencing, weightlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming competitions, water polo and high diving and water polo were held on the Montjuïc.
A further competition venue in Barcelona was the Parc de Mar with the Olympic marina. The competitions took place in the waters just outside Barcelona.

For the Olympics, the entire beach area was redesigned, which was very beneficial for Barcelona tourism after the Games.
