The Three Gorges Dam has 5 huge lock chambers in each direction, each 918ft in length and 114ft width, allowing many ships per lock chamber to overcome the height of about 374ft.

For smaller passenger liners on the Yangtze River a separate ship lift is available. An aggravating factor in the planning phase was that the entire project is located in a seismic region.
