The Roman Quarry near St. Margarethen at Lake Neusiedl has a history of 2000 years.
It was used by the Romans to build Carnuntum. Later, it delivered the stones for the construction of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and many buildings of the Ring Road in Vienna. It is one of the oldest quarries in Europe and since 2001 it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape Fertö / Lake Neusiedl.

Contemporary artists created sculptures along the walks. Karl Prantl in 1959 was the first organizer of the European Sculptor Symposium.

In summer, the festival arena is scene of the elaborately staged Opera Festival St. Margarethen. The open-air opera festival has reached Austria-wide importance.
