More InformationNafplio gained in importance during in the Byzantine Empire. The first castle was built above today’s old town. It is partly misused by a hotel construction.
The second, highly visible fortress was built on the Palamidi hill under Venetian rule. 999 steps lead up to it.
Along the harbor wall, a variety of taverns and restaurants invite for a rest.

In the middle of the harbor entrance is the third fortification of the city, the Bourtzi which was later used as a prison and home of the executioner.
