Út Thủy Homestay
Út Thủy Homestay is an accommodation with adjoining restaurant. Small pavilions with dining tables line above the shore of a small lake. Our bicycle group arrives and we go for lunch.
But before, I do some film shots of the area and surroundings. Everything leaves a very relaxed impression. Some people lie in hammocks and surf on their laptop or read a book. Others come together to have a joint cup of coffee or a refreshment.
Suddenly a man approaches us and asks us what we are doing here. I tell him that we want to capture the beauty of the location in the video. We learned that he is an American who came to Vietnam with the Office of Strategic Services, in the 1960s. After the war, he returned to the United States. But after retiring from active service, he came back to Vietnam. He likes this place so much that he wants to stay and lets just transferred his boat from the USA. We talk for a while and I film him as a reminder. Then we have to go back to our group.
Our next destination is just a few meters away, so we set out on foot. Here, Út Thủy Homestay runs a company for the production of confectionery.
First, one shows us a small snake. We will learn later what it is used for. Then we experience the production of rice snacks. With simple means, but professional and with skillful hands, the staff bakes, rolls out, cuts, and packages the sweets. They use some devices for rasping coconut and to press for syrup.
A woman makes extremely thin edible rice paper. We noticed it already in the garden, where one puts it to dry. In a different place, a lady packages homemade candies.
In the rear of the farm, you can buy various food. We discover several glass containers filled with liquor in which cobras and other snakes are preserved. Well, it does not meet our taste.
On the way to Can Tho
Our boat trip continues since we have 3 more hours ahead of us. We cross a branch of the northern main arm of the Mekong, the Song Tien. At Vinh Long, we boat again into a canal, towards the south. We observe life on the shore or on the other boats. It is striking how friendly the people are. Many of them wave to us, not only children.

The closer the day comes to its end, the more people take a bath in the canals. Probably they had an exhausting day in the heat. We can not make any statement about the quality of the water, but the Mekong is famous for its richness in fish.
Shortly before Can Tho, we turn from the canal into the southern main arm of the Mekong, the Song Hau and the Can Tho Bridge over the Mekong appears in front of us. The 2.7 km long cable-stayed bridge has a clearance of 39 m, allowing even large ships to pass underneath.
The Can Tho Bridge, opened in 2010, is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Southeast Asia. During the construction phase in 2007, a section of the bridge collapsed and killed 52 people. More than 140 were injured. The bridge is an important element of the direct highway connection from Can Tho via Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.
Can Tho
We reach Can Tho with the last light of the day. It is the most important city in the Mekong Delta with over 1.2 million inhabitants. Can Tho has an important port and is a cultural and commercial center.
