Coming from Stockholm, we make a short stop in Mariehamn to embark and disembark passengers before we continue our journey by ferry to Helsinki. Most of the ferries berth here to profit from a tax exemption in their duty-free shops.
At the end of the day, we enjoy the last light of the day before we go to our cabin, to get some sleep.
The cabins offer little space, but for one night it’s fine. There is everything you need.
In the morning we enjoy the bright sunshine on deck. The white silhouette of Helsinki appears already on the horizon.
Again, the ferry must pass a strait. It is the port entrance between the islands of Kustaansalmi and Vallisaaren, guarded by the fortress Suomenlinna.
In the background are the large cruise ships that dock in the port of Vuosaari. Our ferry heads to the south harbor Eteläsatama in the city center.
On entry into port, we pass the island of Valkosaari, once a hospital and a quarantine ward. Today there are two restaurants.
During the mooring, we have a nice view of some of the city’s sights like the Helsinki Cathedral (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko) and Uspensky Cathedral (Finnish: Uspenskin katedraali) from the deck.
In front we see the Presidential Palace and the Supreme Court.
