The monastery Agia Lavra (Agia Lavras) is located on a hill near the town of Kalavryta.

The monastery built in 961, is one of the oldest monasteries in Greece and has a colorful history.
Even though the monastery was burned down by the Turks in 1585, by the army of Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt in 1826 and by the German troops in 1943 it was rebuilt again and again.

On March 25, 1821, Bishop Germanos of Patras blesses the Greek flag here, which marks the beginning of the Greek Revolution.

Since then, the 25th March is the Greek national holiday. A few kilometers away, the Greek Independence monument was erected.
