Ubud in Bali is approx. 30 km north of Denpasar and is a major arts and cultural center of the island.
Mainly painting (often on textiles) and wood and stone carving are practiced here.

More InformationThe biggest tourist attraction is the Ubud Monkey Forest, an approximately 10 hectares large sacred nature reserve with some temples. Approximately 350 crab-eating macaque live here. Tourists should keep an eye on their bags because the monkeys enjoy catching prey.
Walter Spies, a German painter and musician, was appointed to Java by the Sultan of Yogyakarta as a pianist and conductor. Four years later he moved to Bali and founded Gamelan orchestras. His house, which can be visited today, became the cultural center of Bali.
Later he was increasingly ostracized because of his homosexuality. In 1940 he was interned in Bali under Dutch rule and died after the torpedoing of Nias, who wanted to take him and another 400 internees to Ceylon. His paintings can be seen in the museum in Ubud.
Walter Spies housed international artists such as Charlie Chaplin. The Austrian writer Vicky Baum wrote her famous novel “Love and Death in Bali” in his house Ubud.
