Before our arrival in Segovia we experienced a small odyssey. We wanted to drive from San Lorenzo de El Escorial to Segovia, which, according to the map is very close . A taxi-driver told us that we could go by train to the nearby station Villalba de Guadarrama where we can change the train for Segovia.
Before our departure, we asked the friendly receptionist in the Hotel De Martin in Escorial about the departure times and learned that the railway line to Segovia is currently not in operation due to construction. However, we can drive by bus from Villalba to Segovia and she printed us a bus timetable.

Villalba
Upon arrival in Villalba, we realized that the bus to Segovia does not, as we have expected, departs at the station, but at the roundabout in the Av. Honorio Lozano in front of the shopping center. It is a 10 minutes walk from the train station to the shopping center. Because of all our luggage, we decide to take a taxi. Later it turns out that it was just 600 m away.
Once there, we tried to find the correct bus stop, but we received different information. According to our bus schedule, there were several buses. However, we have not taken into account that they stop on different days in different villages. Unfortunately, it was Saturday afternoon, but there was one bus on the list that stops in Villalba, but it should arrive in 2 hours, at 16h. So we had to wait.
At the scheduled time no bus arrived. So we waited another academic quarter of an hour. Then we lost hope and wanted to take the train back to Madrid and from there to Segovia. An elderly woman had watched us and heard that we wanted to go to Segovia. When we were about to leave, she intervened and said we were right and we should wait. And indeed, the bus came after another 3 minutes.
Overall, our trip from El Escorial to Segovia took more than 6 hours. It would have been easier to go directly to Madrid and from there to Segovia. Nevertheless, we did not regret our decision. Except for 2 places in the rear, where filming was practically impossible, the bus was fully booked. To our surprise, the bus ride only costs € 4,83,- per person.
The journey led steeply up in the Sistema Central. From afar we could see El Valle de Los Caidos, the National Monument of the Holy Cross in the Valley of the Fallen, with an underground basilica and an above-ground concrete cross, 155 m high and 44 m wide. The basilica is the burial place of General Franco and the mortal remains of 30,000 people killed in the Civil War. Attached to the Basilica is a monastery.
During our journey, we had a fantastic view to the south and a great distance view to the north.

More InformationSegovia
While we were waiting for the taxi at the bus station in Segovia, a local cycle racing starts in the immediate vicinity. We somehow do not get rid of the impression, that the cyclists are faster than the accompanying vehicles, as they are not able to drive the 90 º bends at speed.
Hotel Infanta Isabel
We choose a hotel directly in the center of Segovia, at the Plaza Mayor, so that we can comfortably reach all sights on foot.

The Hotel Infanta Isabel is sumptuously decorated and the technical equipment complies with the latest standard. The spacious bathroom is equipped with a rain shower. Of course, free fast WiFi is available and the friendly service leaves nothing to be desired.

Plaza Mayor
After our adventurous journey, our zest for action is decelerated and we go out just to eat and to drink something. At that time, a puppet festival for children takes place in the city.
A medieval brass band entertains children and adults at the Plaza Mayor. We enjoy the evening from our front-row seat in the restaurant.
