The island of Burano is 670 m long and 450 m wide and lies about 7 km northeast of Venice in the lagoon. Actually, there are 4 islands separated by channels and connected by many bridges. Today, approx. 2700 people live in Burano.
The island is known for its picturesque colored houses and as well for needle embroideries.
Burano
We arrive by boat in the south of the island, in the canal rio Mandracchio, near the church of Saint Martin Vescovo. The church tower can compete with the leaning tower to Pisa. The canal branches off in a right angle and is now called rio Terranova, spanned by a pretty little bridge.
The straightforward continuation was the Rio Tera, but one filled it in. The street is now called Via Baldassare Galuppi. It is the central shopping street and promenade of the island.
In front of it is Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, the main square in front of the Catholic Church. In the center is a monument to Baldassare Galuppi, an Italian composer born in Burano.
Coming from the south, you see Merletti dalla Olga to the right. Here, one still offers original Burano embroidery.
We cross the square and walk along Via Baldassare Galuppi. Many restaurants and cafes invite you to stop. The blaze of color is stimulating and inspiring. Many narrow lanes branch off to the right and left.

About halfway up, another canal branches off to the right, the rio Pontinello. Again, a curved pedestrian bridge leads across the canal. Cars are not to be seen on the island. They are probably forbidden, and they have no place.
We turn into Calle Galoppi and then return through Calle Babuini. There are hardly any tourists in the side streets and you are almost alone.
We walk along the Fondamenta S. Mauro and then turn right into Viale Marcello. At the ferry terminal Burano SX per f.te Nove we wait until our group has gathered again.
Trattoria Ai Cacciatori – Mazzorbo
For lunch, we take the boat to Trattoria Ai Cacciatori on the neighboring island of Mazzorbo, connected to Burano by a pedestrian bridge. Massimo and Miki have again organized everything perfectly. The head of the restaurant and the chef expect us already.
The excellent maritime dishes consists of regional and seasonal products.
We start with mussels.
As the main dish, one serves Risotto di Gó, made with gobies. This typical specialty of Burano Island dates back to the 1500s.
At that time the lagoon fishermen had problems selling the fish-bone rich fish and so they ate it themselves. The dish became a delicacy and many gourmets traveled to Burano for it.
Between, the chef Giuliano explains us other typical dishes, which we may of course also try.
Tris de Sarde in Saor, three different types of marinated sardines served with polenta.
Plaice with tomatoes and olives
Ricciola, the fish of the day, with artichoke hearts and vegetables.
For dessert we have Bussolá. Chef Giuliano prepares this pastry every three days. Its shape reminds of the shape of the Grand Canal.
We walk back to the ferry terminal and return to Marina di Venezia.
