Before we start for our Canal tour by a boat, we stroll through the Breidelstraat between Grote market and castle.
Here you find the Beer Museum. However, we prefer to look around in the chocolate shop La Belgique Gourmande.
In addition to the many Belgian specialties, we find tools made of chocolate. You actually get the impression that the tools could come from a blacksmith’s shop.
Incidentally, we had a quick chat about Bruges with the nice saleswoman.
We pass the town hall on the right and pass the Blinde-Ezelstraat. A small bridge leads over the Groenerei Canal. On the other side of the canal is the Vismarkt (fish market), but at this hour there is hardly any operation.
On the right-hand side, there is a jetty, where we can board a boat.
The boat goes eastwards along the canal until we reach the Coupure Canal junction and turn north.
Shortly before the bridge with the Camerstraat, we turn again to the west and reach the former harbor at the Jan van Eyck Square.
Now we take the same way back to the jetty. After turning into the Groenerei Canal, we are made aware of the Secret Garden Luxury Suites.
What, with its large fireplaces, resembles a factory building, is an upscale retirement home.
After passing the jetty, we reach the Dijver Canal and turn south and immediately afterward back west. This corner is one of the most beautiful in Bruges. But we will come back again on a walk.
We pass a small park on the left side and see the Church of our Lady in front of us. Here is the burial place of Duke Charles the Bold and Maria of Burgundy. Maximilian I requested that his heart is enclosed at their feet in honor of Mary.
The Canal Tour continues under the Dijver and follows the canal in a southwestern direction up to the Begijnhof.
On a meadow, we see some swans. Legend has it that Maximilian I ordered Bruges to care for the swans (long-necked) for eternal times, as a punishment for their rebellion and imprisonment.

Here, the boat turns and goes back to the jetty.
