The Dong Ba Market – Cho Dong Ba – is the biggest market in the province of Hue. It lies on the north bank of the Perfume River, about one kilometer east of the citadel.
History
Originally, Hue had a big Qui Gia Thi market outside the north-eastern gate of the citadel (Chanh Dong gate, commonly called Dong Ba). In the summer of 1885, the market burned down completely after an attack. In 1887, King Dong Khanh rebuilt it again and named it Dong Ba.
King Thanh Thai had moved it in 1899 to its nowadays position. In 1987 the Chong Ba market has been restored and expanded. Today, the market attracts everyday 5,000-7,000 people, mostly locals, but during big holidays, it can sometimes be twice as many.

Visiting the market
On the narrowest room, the people can buy everything for the daily need.
In addition to meat, fish, fruit and vegetables one can buy a variety of spices and devotional objects for the temples.
A whole floor upstairs is reserved for clothes and fabrics.
Like on most Vietnamese markets, the goods are mainly sold by women. But many of the sold goods are unknown to us and we marvel at what man can eat.
At the same time, the market is a prime example of the difficult circumstances in which the people have to make a living. But everything has its place, even if it seems chaotic.
During a visit of the market no one stays hungry. At different food stalls you can eat fresh dishes of Vietnamese cuisine. However, you will search in vain for ergonomic seating.
Even if there are many supermarkets today, the Dong Ba market still plays an important role in the daily life of the city. The market opens at 3:00 am.
If you like to experience a real local market, we can highly recommend a visit of the Dong Ba Market.
