The El Rocio Pilgrimage has its origin in the 15th century and is known far beyond the borders of Spain.

The place of pilgrimage El Rocio with 800 inhabitants is located near Huelva in southern Andalusia. Annually at Pentecost, more than 1 million pilgrims gather on three days to worship the Virgin of El Rocío, also known as Blanca Paloma – the white dove.
The pilgrims reach their destination over firmly specified routes. From Malaga to El Rocio, the journey takes about one week. We were lucky to see a part of the procession in Malaga.

More InformationThe festively dressed people are accompanied by well equipped covered wagons. A team of oxen draws a modern silver shrine first. Presumably, it contains some relics.

More than 70 carriages follow. Unfortunately, we had to leave after the 70th carriage has passed. In the covered wagon, it is partly very funny. In addition to food, the people enjoy some drinks.

So people spend the next few days: Eating – Drinking – Celebrating – Marching – sometimes sleeping!
