Lofer lies in the province of Salzburg, between Bavaria and Tyrol. It is an important transportation hub between Tyrol and Salzburg via the Deutsches Eck. The Almenwelt is a popular hiking area and, in the winter, an extensive ski resort.

Using the Lofer mountain lifts, we reach the Almenwelt, a sprawling alpine pasture area dotted with traditional inns, guesthouses, and holiday homes. We take the path towards the Senderexpress mountain station at approximately 1,622 meters above sea level.
From there, on a clear day, you can see in all directions. To the west, you can see the Steinplatte and the Winkelmoosalm. The Wilder Kaiser rises in the background.
The Lofer and Leogang Mountains form the southern horizon. To the east lie the Steinernes Meer and the Berchtesgaden Alps. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the state capital, Salzburg.

Near the mountain peaks lies the Marble Lake at an altitude of 1,570 meters. Its clear water and the reddish-hued banks, sown with marble, make it a popular destination.

In summer, one can even take a quick dip, although the water is said to be quite refreshing.

After enjoying the view and the surroundings, we head back towards the Loferer Almbahn 2 mountain station. On the way, we stop at the Alpengasthof Schönblick.

The current owner and his wife have just taken over the building, but due to building regulations, it will have to be rebuilt next summer (2026). However, this doesn’t dampen his spirits. He had a beer and a shot of schnapps with our tour organizer Elfriede, and us, spreading cheer. Elfriede managed our trip perfectly and organized everything flawlessly.

On the drive back to Maishofen, the sun comes out for the first time that day.
