Our journey continues by train from Vienna to Budapest. It takes about 2.5 hours and leads us through the Hungarian lowlands and the low mountain range.
When we arrive, we are in for a few surprises. The station building consists of an underground passageway under the tracks.
While looking for an ATM, we come across Etele Plaza, a modern and attractive shopping mall in front of the station.
At the ticket counter, we learn that pensioners can travel for free. In the metro, we encounter a driverless, fully automated subway train. Budapest presents itself to us as a very modern city.
The metro takes us to Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út station, from where it’s only a few minutes walk to the Dormero Hotel on Dessewffy U.
It is a new hotel that offers everything you need for a pleasant stay.
We have breakfast at Café Brunch, just a few minutes walk away. Here, we meet Gábor Kovács, a passionate photographer. In addition to his work in the café, he posts his impressive pictures on Instagram under @notquiteseeit. When he sees our camera, he immediately asks what we’re up to 🙂
We follow Hajós U. to the Opera House. On the other side of the street, we discover the W. Budapest, a 5-star luxury hotel. We walk to the Opera House. The entrance hall is open to the public and shows the magnificent artistic architecture of the building.
We turn to Andrássy út, where we find the side entrance of the Budapest Operetta Theatre and the Kálmán Imre Theatre. On the opposite side of the street is the Thália Theatre. In front of it, there is a statue called ‘The Embrace of Death, which impressed us a lot :-).
You might end the evening in the neighboring Mai Manó Cafe.
