Our stay in Cabo Verde, marked by so many wonderful experiences, is coming to an end.
The flight from Cesária Évora International Airport takes us over the southeastern part of Mindelo, heading straight for Baía das Gatas. The festival grounds and the towering sand dunes are clearly visible from above. Continuing along the coast, the flight passes over Calhau en route to Sal Island.
The holiday resorts at the southern tip of Sal are easily distinguishable. The clear-watered coastlines are home to many sea turtles, and a constant draw for divers.
We make a brief stop at Amílcar Cabral International Airport to refuel the plane for the return flight.
Immediately after takeoff, we fly over the island’s capital, Espargos.
One of the island’s extinct volcanoes lies in the centre of the town, and a radar station and several radio masts have been built on its summit.
After a brief layover, we take off for the direct flight to Luxembourg. However, visibility is no longer particularly good. Only the island of Fuerteventura, part of the Canary Islands, remains clearly visible.
Back home, we still often think about this memorable trip, which taught us so much about the wonderful people of Cape Verde.
