The distance between Manaus and Belem in the Amazon lowlands in Brazil is about 1300 km.
Only from the airplane, one has an overview of this spacious water-rich area. We made a stopover in Santarem.
In 1979, the Trans-Amazonian Highway, the east-west connection, had been open already. First satellite images showed illegal logging and mono culture on an area the size of Belgium.
Deforestation and urban sprawl of the Amazon lowlands were discussed and condemned. Little has changed; people who fight against the deforestation are still threatened and often pay with their lives!
