The crater lake of Grand Bassin- Ganga Talao – on the island of Mauritius is considered the largest Hindu pilgrimage site outside India. According to legend Parvati the wife of Lord Shiva has spilled some of the water of the Ganges here, which then formed the lake.
Numerous victim shrines and God statues form the sanctuary. The main statue is dedicated to Mother Ganga.
Others show the monkey god Hanuman, the elephant god Ganesha, as well as Vishnu, Krishna and Lankshimi.
The colorfully dressed Hindus are tolerant enough to allow taking pictures and videos of themselves at the ceremonies.
