Methoni lies on the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese. Already during the second Peloponnesian War the people of Messene built a fortification against the Spartans here.
Under the Romans, Mark Anthony embellished it on a grand scale. The massive city walls were built by the Byzantines and Venetians. In the Greek War of Independence, French troops conquered Methoni from the Ottomans and handed it to the Greeks.

More InformationA special feature is the Burtzi, a tower located at the southernmost point, which is equipped with its own gate and fortification walls.

Presumably the Burtzi served as the last refuge. An underground cistern inside safeguarded the drinking water supply in case of a siege.
