The New Museum (Neues Museum) on the Museum Island in Berlin houses two museums: the Egyptian Museum with the Papyrus Collection and the Museum for prehistory and early history.

The construction of the museum began in 1841 and was completed in 1866. For the construction, steel structures were integrated into the masonry; this was the first time that industrialization was taken into account. Furthermore, a steam engine with 10 horsepower was used for the first time. In the 2nd World War the building was badly damaged and was not used for decades. Only in 1989 began the reconstruction, which was completed in 2009.

Museum for prehistory and early history
Just after entering the building one stands in front of Priam’s Treasure, or rather in front of a true to the original copy. After the 2nd World War, the original was moved as looted art to Russia, which was confirmed in 1993. Nevertheless, it is uplifting to see these items, of which you had already learned in school, with your own eyes.

On the 3rd floor, you find the Berlin Gold Hat from the Bronze Age and other items from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age.

The Egyptian Museum
Past vessels and vases, as well as lots of sculptures – mostly Egyptian deities – we reached the Greek and the Egyptian Court.

We were particularly impressed the sculpture of a writer before the God Thoth, who is represented as a baboon.

A number of sarcophagi and grave goods from Pharaonic and Greek time are exhibited on the lower floor.

The famous Nefertiti, heavily guarded, can be admired on the 2nd floor.
Since 1999, the Museum Island belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
