The Parliament Hill Ottawa is the most popular attraction of the city.
In 1857, Ottawa was determined by Queen Victoria as capital of the “United Provinces of Ontario and Quebec”. This ended a bitter dispute between the three candidates Montreal, Toronto and Kingston for the title.
The expansion to the capital progressed rapidly and was crowned by the building of the parliament building in Neo-Gothic style. The government district is dominated by the Peace Tower.
Outside the parliament building burns the Centennial Flame in a fountain. It was lit in 1966.
From time to time, one can take a picture in front of the parliament together with one of the legendary Mounties.
