We have some time and enjoy a break at the Lake of Banyoles. It’s a wonderful early summer day and the ducks seem to be in the best mood. Only a duck lady needs a lot of time for her make-up before it is ready for the photo shoot.

We continue our journey to Ravos de Terri, about 8 km southeast of Banyoles. The church of Sant Cugat de Ravos de Terri is part of a castle.

It was built in the 12th century, later the castle was built around it.

More InformationExcellent frescoes which presumably date from the 13th century are in the apse. Created by the traveling painter with nicknames Master Ravos, they were long time painted over. During renovations in 1928 they have been rediscovered and restored.
These are the only Catalan frescoes which are still at their place of origin, the place where they had been painted. Normally, you get to see something like that only in MNAC (National Art Museum of Catalunya) in Barcelona.

The church is dedicated to Saint Cugat (Sant Cucuphas), a martyr originating from Tunisia, who was allegedly executed here. His relics are now in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar in Barcelona.

The Església de Sant Cugat de Ravos de Terri is not publicly accessible, no masses are celebrated here. We owe it to the efforts of Vikki Benito and Txell Pujol from Consell Comarcal Pla de l’Estany, which made the visit possible.
