Today’s journey from Maishofen takes us via Saalfelden to the Saalach Valley, the village of Weißbach, and the Seisenbergklamm gorge, before finally reaching the Lamprechtshöhle cave.

The best way to reach the Seisenbergklamm gorge from the bus stop in Weißbach is on foot, via a Kneipp facility and a water play area. Here, you can improve your health in a fun way.

At the entrance to the gorge, you will find a sawmill, where woodcutters used to drive tree trunks through the gorge.

The gorge was formed around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last Ice Age. Each year, the water erodes the rock by about 5–6 mm. The 600 m long gorge with 300 steps, overcomes a height difference of around 80 meters. Plan to spend an hour crossing the gorge.

The most striking part of the gorge is called Dunkelklamm. Here, the water has carved its way through the hard limestone. It is fascinating to witness the power of the water and the impressive rock formations it has created.
At its narrowest point, the gorge is just 80 cm wide. Sensors monitor critical areas of the rock to detect rock movements at an early stage. The current wooden walkways, which were built in 1954, allow visitors to cross the gorge comfortably.

While we wait for the bus to continue to Lamprechtshöhle, we enjoy coffee and cake at Café Auvogl. It is actually possible to walk the 1.5-kilometre route to the cave.

Lamprechtshöhle is located halfway between Weißbach and Lofer.

At over 50 km long and more than 1,700 m deep, it is one of the largest cave systems in Europe and the fifth deepest in the world. Visitors can walk through 700 metres of the cave.

In 1998, a Polish research group discovered a second entrance at 2,296 metres above sea level in Ebersbergkar. The cave is also one of the most challenging caves in the world to explore.

This fascinating natural monument is definitely worth seeing.

Afterwards, we return to Maishofen and go for a walk to take a look at the Kitzsteinhorn.

With the visitor ticket provided by the hotel, we can use public transport free of charge.
The next day, we begin our journey home from this successful holiday, which has allowed us to see many natural sights.
