St Wolfgang, the tourist center of the Salzkammergut region is located on the northern shore of the Wolfgangsee lake.
The larger part of the Wolfgangsee lake belongs to the Austrian state of Salzburg. However, the town lies on the Upper Austrian territory and is dominated by the Schafberg mountain. St Wolfgang attained world fame by the musical comedy “In the white Horse Inn”.
The paddle steamer “Kaiser Franz Joseph” was taken in operation in 1873 and is still today part of the regular shipping service on the lake.
During a stay in St Wolfgang, you should visit its tiny parish church where you can see an artistic late Gothic altarpiece in the shape of the richly decorated winged high altar by Michael Pacher.
