Starkenburg, a municipality in the district Bernkastel-Wittlich lies 250 m above the Moselle River on a rocky ridge in the Hunsrück.
The strongly sloping hillside towards the Moselle offers an unspoiled view of the town of Traben-Trarbach.
Originally the place was already inhabited by the Romans and later destroyed by the Franks.
In the 13th century the Countess Loretta of Sponheim kept the eminent Archbishop and Elector of Trier Baldwin of Luxembourg captured in Starkenburg and had only released him after the payment of a substantial ransom again.
Today, the picturesque town offers tourists a wide variety of motives and marvelous views of the Moselle.
