We leave Angkor Wat through the eastern gate and enjoy the water lilies in the surrounding moat.


Afterwards we go to the Ta Prohm temple complex. Many visitors regard it as the most beautiful temple. Anyway, it is the most spectacular one.

The French discoverers of Angkor had decided to leave one temple in the condition in which it was found. They decided in favor of Ta Prohm.

It is impressive to see how strangler figs and Tetrameles nudiflora, a deciduous tree with buttress roots, has overgrown the entire buildings and blast the walls.

Collapsed walls and mountains of stones take the visitors back to the past. This creates an adventurous atmosphere, at least, if only few tourists are around.

The monastery and the temple were built in the 13th century by King Jayavarman VII. Expansions were made under King Indravarman II. At that time it was inhabited by 12640 monks.

The temple ruins were the ideal backdrop for the movie Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie as a film heroine Lara Croft. This reinforces the sense of adventure.

India has participated in the restoration of the temple and reconstructed a gallery.
The time-consuming process clearly suggests that the struggle against nature cannot be won.

Ta Prohm impressed us so much, that we could hardly separate from the sight of these unusual motifs.

It is not surprising that it is one of the most visited temple complexes in the Angkor region.
