We are approaching the highlights of Carnival 2026 in Cape Verde. This morning, we are greeted by a surprise: the view across the bay is so hazy that the opposite shore is indistinguishable. Saharan dust hangs in the air. This weather phenomenon is called Bruma Seca.
Today, the Mandingas are the stars of the parades.
With their eerie appearance and wild dances, they impress the audience. This tradition is inspired by West African warriors and their behavior during battles. The goal was to distract the enemy and launch a surprise attack when they least expected it.
Although the Mandingas may appear frightening, they are actually friendly and harmless. This is evident from the fact that not only adult warriors, but also children and older people participate in the parades.
It’s wonderful to see how much the carnival inspires people of all ages.
