The viewpoint Cuatro Postes, four poles, offers the most beautiful panorama view of the city of Avila, its walls, and towers. It is on a hill about 20 minutes’ walk from the center of Avila.
The monument, erected in 1566, consists of four Doric columns with a cross of granite in the middle.
There used to be the pilgrimage trail to the Ermita de San Leonardo. According to a legend, the monument is to remind of the unhappy events that happened during a pilgrimage for gratitude for the end of the plague. Muslims had entered the almost empty city during the pilgrimage.
Another legend says that this is the place, where Teresa of Jesus and her brother Rodrigo were caught by their uncle while they were on the way south. They wanted to spread the word of God and were not concerned that they might be killed.
Visiting the Viewpoint Cuatro Postes
On the way to the viewpoint Cuatro Postes, we cross the valley of the Rio Adaja. In the heat of the day, the shade of the trees and the clear waters of the river offer a welcome refreshment.
Between the viewpoint and Rio Adaja, some paths lead through the meadows. Here one can recover from the heat of the city and enjoy the tranquility.
We visit the viewpoint Cuatro Postes several times, to see the town and the wall in different colors, varying depending on day and night-time.
A visit in the evening hours is particularly recommendable. The illuminated wall and the sky above the town, changing from blue to black, have something magical. We are lucky, because, during our visit, the full moon is directly over the town in the evening hours.

About 400 meters to the north is a parking bay, just before a roundabout. From here you also have a view, with the difference that the city wall presents itself still more broadly and in full length.
We are impressed by this wonderful view, which makes the city appear in ever new colors like a theater backdrop.
