The Wannian Temple is the oldest surviving temple on Mount Emei. Among the over 200 temples that existed at one time, only 20 remain today.
The rest had been destroyed mainly during the Cultural Revolution. The 3099 m high Mount Emei, also called Da Guang Ming Shan (Mountain of Great Light), is in the central Chinese province of Sichuan.
The Wannian Temple is a little different than other temples.

The Wannian Temple was originally called Puxian- or Samantabhadra-Temple.
The bronze statue of the bodhisattva Puxian, placed upon a life-sized elephant with 6 teeth, towers above the landscape of this magnificent garden temple.
The statue of Puxian dates back to the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1112), is 3.64 m tall and weighs 62 tons.
