We take the train from Koblenz on the Rhine to Vienna. Our last visit to Austria’s capital was 16 years ago.
First, we take the regional train from Wittlich along the Moselle to Koblenz at 9 a.m. As we still have a little time before our connecting train arrives, we treat ourselves to breakfast. Our Intercity to Vienna arrives on the platform on time at 10:48 a.m. The scheduled arrival time in Vienna is 7 p.m.

The journey takes us along the Rhine, past the Lorelei at St. Goar, to Frankfurt, and on to Würzburg, Nuremberg, Passau, Wels, Linz, St. Pölten, Tulln, and Vienna.

In Austria, we notice three basilicas built high up on hills: Pöstlingberg in Linz, Sonntagsberg near Waidhofen an der Ybbs, and Maria Taferl near Ybbs.
My last trip on this route by train was around 50 years ago, so it is no surprise that there have been changes. In Melk, the line goes through a newly built tunnel, so there is only a brief glimpse of the impressive monastery. Unfortunately, I was too slow with the camera.
The second, even greater change is a newly built tunnel from the Tullnerfeld under the Vienna Woods directly to Vienna Central Station. Unfortunately, this means that you can no longer see the landscape. The advantage, however, is that the journey from Linz to Vienna only takes 1 hour 20.

The arrival in Vienna makes up for this all the more. The newly built central station and the new district built around it amaze us.
