The Hohenwerfen Castle, visible from a distance, is located above the Austrian town Werfen approx. 25 miles south of Salzburg.
The castle was built by the archbishops of Salzburg, simultaneously with the Hohensalzburg Castle.
After several fires, the castle gained in significance during the Turkish wars. During the 2nd World War II it served as training camp for the Nazi Party.

More InformationPresumably this circumstance inspired scriptwriter Alistair MacLean, director Brian G. Hutton and the producer Elliott Kästner to produce their success film “Where Eagles Dare” with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in this location.
The scenes in the fictional “Schloss Adler” were turned here. Due to the fact, that the castle does not have a cableway, the memorable cableway scene was turned on the Feuerkogel cableway in Ebensee.
A guided tour through the castle always opens up new vistas. As can be seen in the video, one has a lovely panorama view from the Hohenwerfen Castle of the surrounding mountains and the Salzach valley.
