With 4K, the magnetic cassette is deprecated; the recording is only on smart cards.
Filming is now not only a matter of the right chip and the right lens, it is now an IT-related business.
4K is specified with 4096×2160 pixel. Unfortunately, this format is not suitable for 16:9 TV sets. Black bands will be added above and below. Therefore, one has defined 4K Ultra HD with 3840×2160 pixel. Currently, TV sets are almost exclusively offered with Ultra HD in the market.
Again it was necessary to opt for a new 4k video camera.
We would have loved to choose the Sony PMW-F5 because of its light intensity and its Slow motion qualities. However, it was rejected for price reasons.
Therefore, we decided in favor of the Sony PXW Z100 and the Panasonic LUMIX GH4. A backup camera for emergencies is essential when traveling!
Both video cameras can record 4K (4096×2160); the Z100 with 50fps, the GH4 with 25 fps, furthermore the GH4 can be used as digital camera.
A weakness of the Panasonic GH4 is a missing power zoom, so that a zoom operation during filming hardly comes into question. All attempts to manually zooming, led to an ugly jerking .
We tested the Black Magic Production 4K Camera with Canon lenses. It would have been handy, because it uses 500GB SSD disks as a recording medium. However, the handling was so impractical that the camera was out of question for our travel reports.
